Project information and notifications of upcoming work will be posted on this page throughout construction related to the Highway 99 Tunnel Program.
General Updates
- Work is underway to improve travel along the Highway 99 corridor in advance of construction of a new, eight-lane tunnel that will replace George Massey Tunnel.
- The Project team has begun geotechnical investigations in the Fraser River, near the new tunnel’s portals and along the new highway alignment. The results will inform Project design. Learn more about geotechnical investigations
Construction & Traffic Updates
As part of the Fraser River Tunnel Project to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a new eight-lane, toll-free tunnel, intermittent overnight lane closures will occur within the tunnel until February 2026. This is necessary to complete ongoing geotechnical investigations.

As part of the Fraser River Tunnel Project to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a new eight-lane, toll-free tunnel, overnight single-lane closures will take place within the tunnel to allow crews to safely complete a pre-condition assessment ahead of geotechnical work planned on Deas Island in August.

In preparation for construction of the new eight-lane tunnel starting in 2026, we are carrying out geotechnical investigations on Deas Island near the existing tunnel and south of Rice Mill Road in Richmond, beside the existing tunnel. Work will take place beginning in August 2025, continuing until approximately early 2026.

As part of the Fraser River Tunnel Project to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a new eight-lane toll-free tunnel, there will be intermittent, overnight lane closures of Highway 99 between Westminster Highway and Highway 17 in March and April to allow crews to safely conduct geotechnical investigation work.
