Fraser River Tunnel Project Overview

The Fraser River Tunnel Project includes a new, eight-lane immersed tube tunnel that will replace the existing George Massey Tunnel on Highway 99. The new tunnel will have three vehicle lanes and a dedicated transit lane in each direction, with a separated active transportation corridor for cyclists and pedestrians. 

The project also includes replacing the Deas Slough Bridge and decommissioning of the existing tunnel once the new immersed tube tunnel is in operation.

  • Status: The project entered procurement with request for qualifications issued on June 14, 2023. On October 18, 2023, the Province shortlisted three teams to participate in the request for proposals phase. The project is concurrently in the Province’s Environmental Assessment process.
  • Project Budget: $4.15 billion
  • Schedule: Contract award is anticipated in 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and Project completion in 2030.
