As we get ready to break ground on the new toll-free, eight-lane replacement of the George Massey Tunnel, crews are moving ahead with early construction works.
Work began in January 2026 with several months of tree clearing to make way for construction of the higher-capacity tunnel and highway alignment. Other early construction works, such as construction of temporary structures, will follow throughout the year.
In July 2025, the Fraser River Tunnel Project received an Order in Council to proceed with early construction works while the Project’s Environmental Assessment process continues.
Early construction taking place in 2026 includes:
- Tree clearing
- Utility relocations
- Creating construction-vehicle access roads
- Site development
- Installation of containment walls
- Ground improvements
- Construction of temporary structures to reduce construction traffic on roads:
- Jetties to provide boat access to Deas Island and Richmond so materials and equipment can be delivered via the Fraser River
- A temporary trestle bridge on the east side of the existing Deas Slough Bridge so crews can access the work site
Tree clearing
Between January and March, tree clearing took place place in Deas Island, the City of Delta near RiverWoods, and the City of Richmond. Additional tree clearing is planned for later this year. Replanting will occur once the Project is completed.
- Deas Island – starting January 2026
- City of Delta near RiverWoods – starting early February 2026
- City of Richmond – starting February 2026
