Construction & Traffic Updates
Concrete pours for the traffic median and bike lane curbs on the new Steveston Interchange Project overpass are scheduled to begin as early as Friday, January 16.

Drivers can expect the following improvements at Steveston Interchange starting the morning of Tuesday, December 23, 2025:
- Southbound Highway 99 off-ramp: A second dedicated right-turn lane onto Steveston Highway westbound has been added. This new dual right-turn traffic pattern will be controlled by a traffic signal.
- Northbound Highway 99 off-ramp: A new secondary left-turn lane has been added.
- Steveston Highway Overpass: Two westbound lanes, two eastbound lanes and a dedicated left-turn lane that spans the length of the overpass have been added for vehicles.
- Sidewalks: Protected sidewalks have been added on both sides of the overpass.

As work progresses on the Steveston Interchange Project, eastbound and westbound traffic will be shifted onto the south half of the new structure to allow for the paving of the north section.
This temporary traffic pattern change will begin as early as November 27, and will remain in effect for approximately three weeks.

Updated November 13, 2025: The below-noted work has been postponed until further notice. The southbound off-ramp traffic configuration will remain unchanged in the interim.
As work progresses toward completion of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project, a new traffic pattern change will be implemented on the southbound Highway 99 off-ramp.
Beginning as early as November 13, a second dedicated right-turn lane onto Steveston Highway westbound will be introduced. This new dual right-turn traffic pattern will be controlled by a traffic signal.

As work progresses toward completion of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project, final sidewalk, curb, and paving works will be carried out until the new overpass fully opens to the public later this fall. Work will be taking place in various areas across the Project site.

Updated October 23: The overnight Highway 99 detour will be extended until approximately October 31.
As work progresses toward completion on the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project, Highway 99 will be closed to overnight traffic for approximately two weeks beginning as early as October 19.
The traffic pattern change is to allow crews to safely complete electrical work on the new Phase 2 structure.

Beginning as early as October 6 and continuing for approximately three weeks, crews will be reconstructing the existing southbound on-ramp. To safely accommodate these improvements, the southbound lane will be closed.

Starting as early as Tuesday, September 23, single-lane alternating traffic will be in effect on Steveston Highway for one night between 11 p.m. and 4.30 a.m.
This temporary traffic pattern change is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient completion of scheduled inspection work.

Updated September 17: The overnight southbound detour will use the on- and off-ramps, instead of the bus lane.
As work progresses toward completion of the Steveston Interchange Project, overnight changes to traffic patterns on Highway 99 will be required for road resurfacing.
Starting as early as September 15, work will take place nightly between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for approximately two weeks.

As work progresses toward completion of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project, Highway 99 will be closed to traffic overnight as early as September 14 to allow crews to pour the main-span concrete deck on the Phase 2 structure.
The closure will take place between 10 p.m. and 5.00 a.m. Vehicles travelling on Highway 99 will be detoured using the on- and off-ramps at Steveston Highway

As work progresses on Phase 2 of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project, road construction will be taking place at the eastern and western intersections of Steveston Highway for approximately one month, beginning as early as August 10.
Overnight, Highway 99 ramp lane closures and traffic pattern shifts on Steveston Highway are expected between 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

Highway 99 northbound and southbound will be closed to traffic overnight between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. as early as August 5. The closure is needed to ensure crews can safely move heavy machinery across Highway 99 from the southwest to the southeast quadrant.

Update: Work to install the Phase 2 main-span girders has been completed ahead of schedule, and the traffic pattern changes indicated below will no longer be required on the week of July 21.
As work progresses on Phase 2 of the new, five-lane Steveston Interchange, the delivery and installation of the main concrete girders that will span Highway 99 is scheduled to begin as early as July 18. This will require the closure of Highway 99 for approximately 8 consecutive nights.
To minimize traffic interruptions, work will only take place during the following times:
- July 18 – 19: 10 P.M. to 7 A.M.
- July 20 – 25: 10 P.M. to 4:30 A.M.

Overnight on July 8 and 9, drivers can expect periodic single-lane alternating traffic on Steveston Highway. This is required to safely conduct drainage work.
The overpass sidewalk will remain open, and transit stops will be maintained in all directions. There will be no impacts to Highway 99 traffic.

Beginning as early as June 11, crews will be working on the south side of Steveston Highway, just west of the Highway 99 on-ramp, to widen a 100-metre section of both the road and sidewalk. Work is scheduled to last for approximately one month, during daytime and nighttime hours.
Pedestrians will be directed to make a minor detour while sidewalk construction is underway.

Ground improvement and drainage activities are currently in progress as we move forward with Phase 2 construction of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange. Starting Monday, March 31, 2025 and lasting for approximately two weeks, crews will require nightly lane closures on the northbound off-ramp to accommodate drainage work.

Beginning Thursday, March 6, drivers can expect periodic single-lane alternating traffic on Steveston Highway overnights for approximately two months. This is required to safely conduct ground improvements and for road grading on the east side of the overpass. Drivers can expect short periods where lanes to the east of Highway 99 remain unpaved while road grading is conducted.
Starting the week of February 17 and lasting for approximately three months, crews will begin stone column installation and pile driving work in the southwest and southeast quadrants of the Project.
Occasional weekend work may be necessary to complete this stage of the Project. If needed, weekend work will be limited to the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to minimize disruptions.
This is an update of the notification from February 18.
Work to remove the existing Steveston Highway Overpass has been completed ahead of schedule and traffic pattern changes will no longer be required on the weekend of February 28-March 3, as previously indicated.
UPDATED January 31: Previously scheduled work on the weekend of January 31-February 3 has been postponed due to the forecasted winter weather event. Work is now scheduled to begin on February 7, 2025. Please visit our current work page for the latest status updates.
On the weekends of January 31-February 3, February 7-10 and February 21-24, drivers can anticipate delays around the Steveston Interchange Project as crews work to remove the existing overpass.
Please consider alternate routes when possible, such as the Alex Fraser Bridge via Highway 91.
With the north half of the new overpass now completed, vehicle traffic will shift onto the north structure in two phases. Overnight on January 15, westbound traffic will be rerouted to the new overpass, with new lane markings to direct drivers. Delays are not expected.
Highway 99 will be closed to traffic in both directions on the night of December 5 to pour a large section of the concrete deck on the north half of the new overpass.
Construction of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project is progressing and will require paving and electrical work on Steveston Highway, west of the overpass.
Overnight work is scheduled to take place nightly between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. beginning on December 1, 2024, until the morning of December 12.
Lane closures will be in place on Steveston Highway, and drivers can expect minor delays.
Due to the ongoing construction of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project, changes to the bus stops on Steveston Highway will take place beginning November 25, 2024.
On Wednesday, August 7, an overnight Highway 99 closure is required to move a heavy-lift crane across the highway. Vehicles travelling on Highway 99 will be detoured using the on- and off-ramps at Steveston Highway. The northbound loop ramp from Steveston Highway onto Highway 99 will be closed. Traffic will be rerouted to access the north side on-ramp.
The detour will be in place between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. This overnight closure has been completed.
Following that, beginning August 8 and ending the morning of Saturday August 10, Highway 99 traffic will be reduced to a minimum of one lane in each direction overnight. The northbound loop ramp will also be closed with traffic rerouted on site to access the north side ramp. Lane reductions will resume beginning the evening of Monday August 12 and finish the morning of Saturday August 17.
Work will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
On Wednesday, August 7, an overnight Highway 99 closure is required to move a heavy-lift crane across the highway. Vehicles travelling on Highway 99 will be detoured using the on- and off-ramps at Steveston Highway. The northbound loop ramp from Steveston Highway onto Highway 99 will be closed. Traffic will be rerouted to access the north side on-ramp.
The detour will be in place between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.
Following that, beginning August 8 and ending the morning of Sunday August 11, Highway 99 traffic will be reduced to a minimum of one lane in each direction overnight. The northbound loop ramp will also be closed with traffic rerouted on site to access the north side ramp.
Work will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The work to complete the girder installation for stage one of the new Steveston Highway overpass will occur overnight, starting the evening of Tuesday, July 30, and concluding in the early morning of Friday, August 2.
As a result of this work, the eastbound to northbound loop ramp onto Highway 99 will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Traffic will be rerouted on site to access the northbound on-ramp.
In addition, a full Highway 99 closure is required to move heavy equipment across the highway overnight on Tuesday, July 30. Vehicles travelling on Highway 99 will be detoured using the on- and off-ramps at Steveston Highway.
To minimize traffic disruptions, the Highway 99 detour will only be in place between 11 p.m. and 4.30 a.m.
