General Updates
- Construction to replace the existing two-lane Steveston Interchange with a new five-lane structure is underway.
- Current and upcoming work includes ground densification, installing stone columns and pile driving to support the piers for the new interchange.
- Construction activities, detours, and large machinery are expected at the Steveston Interchange and Highway 99 intersection for the rest of 2023.
Construction & Traffic Updates
Highway 99 north and southbound will be closed to traffic overnight between 11 p.m. on March 19 and 4:30 a.m. on March 20.
Traffic impacts on Steveston Highway and Highway 99 related to pier piling as part of the Steveston Interchange Project have been extended to the week of March 11.
Highway 99 northbound and southbound will be closed to traffic overnight between 11 p.m. on January 26 and 4:30 a.m. on January 27.
Highway 99 north and south will be closed to traffic for a short duration overnight between 11 p.m. on July 12 and 4:30 a.m. on July 13.
Beginning the week of June 26, pile driving will take place in the northwest and northeast quadrants of the Steveston Interchange Project for a period of approximately four to six weeks.
As part of the Province of B.C.’s Steveston Interchange Project, which will expand the interchange from two to five lanes, crews will set up a modular office for construction personnel on Rice Mill Road, within the Province’s right-of-way.
As part of the new five-lane Steveston Interchange Project, Highway 99 north and south will be closed to traffic for a short duration overnight between 11 p.m. on May 28 and 4:30 a.m. on May 29. The closure is needed to ensure crews can safely move heavy machinery across Highway 99.
Starting in early April and lasting for approximately three months, crews will complete ground improvements including preload, stone column installations and piling within the northwest and northeast quadrants of the project.
Telus crews will remove poles north of the Steveston Interchange Project between March 20-22. There will be a full closure on Highway 99 and lane closures on Steveston Highway.
There will be a two-hour overnight closure on Highway 99 on March 5-6 while crews finish the relocation of an existing BC Hydro electrical line north of the Steveston Interchange Project.
On February 13, crews will begin tree removal for construction of the Steveston Interchange Project. The work will take place on the east and west sides of the interchange along Steveston Highway and last about three weeks.
Starting January 16 and lasting for about a month, crews will install a new electrical line across Highway 99. This work includes installing new wooden electrical poles adjacent to Steveston Highway and Highway 99 ramps, connecting the new line to an existing line on both sides of Highway 99, and removing the existing poles and line.
As part of the Province of B.C.’s Steveston Interchange Project, which will expand the interchange from two to five lanes, crews are preparing the area for the new interchange construction. Starting on November 3 and lasting for approximately three months, crews will remove trees, vegetation, and topsoil within the vicinity of the Steveston Interchange, including the northbound onramp onto Highway 99, in advance of upcoming utility relocation work. Crews will also build access roads into the construction area at the same time.
As part of the Province of B.C.’s Steveston Interchange Project, which will expand the interchange from two to five lanes, crews will perform soil sampling and electrical work. Traffic impacts are not anticipated, and noise impacts will be minimal.
As part of the Province of B.C.’s Steveston Interchange Project, which will expand the interchange from two to five lanes, crews will set up a temporary office facility on the west side of Highway 99 within the Province’s right-of-way. There will be trucks and equipment involved in the set up, but there will be no traffic impacts.
As part of the Province of B.C.’s Steveston Interchange Project, which will expand the interchange from two to five lanes, crews will be performing utilities investigation in the project area. This work involves using a hydrovac truck to remove the asphalt and soil to locate utilities. Crews will work in the shoulder area of eastbound Steveston Highway by Richmond Country Farms. Work will be completed overnight to minimize traffic impacts on Highway 99.
As part of the Province of B.C.’s Steveston Interchange Project, which will expand the interchange from two to five lanes, crews are completing geotechnical investigations in the project area. Geotechnical investigations involve drilling boreholes to gather important information about soil conditions. Crews will work in the areas surrounding the loop on-ramp on the east side of the interchange. This work will require a hydrovac truck and truck-mounted drill rig equipment. Work will be completed overnight to minimize traffic impacts on Highway 99.

Geotechnical investigations involve drilling boreholes to gather important information about soil conditions. Crews will work in the areas surrounding the Highway 99 southbound HOV/bus lane, Highway 99 eastbound to northbound on-ramp, and near the bridge approaches on Steveston Highway. This work will require a hydrovac truck and track-mounted drill rig equipment. Work will be completed overnight to minimize traffic impacts on Highway 99 and Steveston Highway.
