The Province is moving ahead with the Fraser River Tunnel Project, which will see a new toll-free, eight-lane tunnel constructed to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel. The new tunnel will feature a separate, multi-use path connecting to Richmond, Deas Island and Delta.
To support construction of the new tunnel, periodic closures of a section of Millennium Trail will be required for the safety of trail users and construction crews.
During construction
Starting in June 2026 and continuing through the summer, crews will perform utility works and earthworks (including excavation, backfilling, and culvert installation) east of Highway 99, just south of the Deas Slough Bridge. This area will become a key construction staging area for crews, equipment, and materials accessing Deas Island, where the casting basin for the tunnel components will be built. As a result, a 150-metre section of Millennium Trail will be closed during this period (see map right). Further Millennium Trail closures may be required as the Project progresses.
We recognize the trail’s significance to the community and are working to maintain access whenever possible. To keep the trail open during construction, the trail may be temporarily realigned or surfaced with temporary materials. When required, traffic control personnel will be on site to assist pedestrians and cyclists.
Advance notice will be provided when closures are required.
For more detailed information, please visit the Current Work webpage, or watch for signage within your community or on the trail.
Once the new tunnel is commissioned
The future multi-use path will link Millennium Trail directly to Deas Island via a safe and convenient connection over Deas Slough. Once the Fraser River Tunnel Project is complete, the portion of the trail within the Ministry’s right-of-way will be upgraded to a five-metre-wide paved path, which is an improvement over the narrower gravel trail that previously existed.
